Social good design project for a medication reminder (MedRem)

MedRem is an easy-to-use app and website that helps users stay on top of their medications, measurements, and activities so they can keep their health in check.

Understanding The User

User research

The research identified the primary user group as adults who need to take their medication on time, but have difficulty keeping track of their medication schedule and remaining medication.

The research also revealed that a medication tracker was not only their need. The accessibility of health records, prescriptions of medications, and doctor’s information are also problems users encounter.

Personas

Problem statement:

Anthony is a busy business worker who needs a website to track his medication and count the remaining amount of medicine because he sometimes forgets to order medicine before it runs out.

Problem statement:

Working student Olivia needs a way to keep track of her medicine schedule, as she sometimes forgets to take it.

Competitive audit

An audit of a few competitors’ products provided direction and opportunities to address the MedRem app and website.

Starting The Design

Ideation

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for the direction and opportunities identified in the competitive audit. It was my goal to simplify the design of the interface and user flow design while focusing on what users need.

Digital wireframes

After ideation and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the MedRem app. I created the designs based on feedback and findings from user research.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

I created a low-fidelity prototype for usability testing. Integrated the primary user flow for creating reminders.

Usability study

Time-consuming

Users need a faster way to create a reminder process with fewer steps.

Add information

Users need a summary of the information that has already been added.

Process

Users need a better process for creating a reminder.

Refining The Design

Mockups

As a result of the usability studies, I applied design changes like summarizing the information that has already been added.

Responsive Design

Sitemap

I started designing the responsive website after the app design. By using a hierarchical structure for the website sitemap, I aimed to simplify and make it clear.

Responsive designs

Designs for screen size variation including mobile, tablet, and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit the specific user needs of each device.

Takeaway

What I learned…

Regardless of how large a problem may seem, it can be solved by considering and coordinating each step diligently.
